Ed "Belfore"

No.. this isn't a typo. You see, I used to be a comic book artist and I had my own company self publishing, with my husband, Christopher (writer). Anyway, we did a book called Second Rate Heroes under the imprint "Foundation Comics". If you got the first issue, you saw that the opening panels were in Chicago Stadium. One of our main characters just so happened to be a female hockey player in our world's version of the NHL. Nicole Claudel, and her brother Geoff Claudel, were the opening story of issue #1.

We had hoped to be able to keep self publishing at least to finish the first 6 issue story arc and release what we had dubbed the "All Hockey Issue" (aka #7). We went through a few change of plans, thinking of releasing the first 6 issues as a trade paperback (if you're not familiar with these terms, go to your local bookstore near the fiction/sci fi section and look at the big heavy spined paperback books like Xmen, Superman and Spiderman... after a while the companies collect the story arcs for easier collectibility for those more interested in reading the stories than bagging the single issues). Then we thought we'd go all out and release an almost hockey program-like trade of #7 which was a story arc focusing on Nicole Claudel aka Glace. The plan for me to have fun with, was again to open the story in Chicago Stadium (our world didn't tear it down :P pffft!) and show the Foundation world's version of the Blackhawks (The Chicago Blackfoot) winning the cup. I really looked forward to drawing these sequences. You see.. we didn't totally use "real" people in the stories.. but we did in a way. You just change the names a little to show a tip of the hat, but not really "use" the name. For example: issue number one you see Mark Modano and Mike Tinordi (my least fave name switching - I kept slipping in real life), Rownick got slipped in a few times in the background... and although you couldn't see his name.. he was a shadow in the opening panels.. Ed Belfore had made an "appearance" as well and would have been one of the people holding the cup at the end of this "game" from #7.

Unfortunately, the comic is no more - I have gotten a bit tired of the stress of having to keep drawing forever it seemed, and never feeling an end to things. Other things I really wanted to do had to slip by and die away from my chances of finding out if I could've enjoyed them or not. I just was not willing to put that much time into one thing anymore.

Please remember that this picture was done and scanned in while still using the old handheld black and white scanner, so chunks of the lines don't line up well. This was a play drawing I did to have fun with... as Chris commented to me, Geoff probably put "Ed" up to doing this, and pulling pranks on Nicole is not a smart thing.. so I'm sure both regretted their actions after the dumping. Enjoy and thanks for reading this long-winded explanation.
